Honoring the Vision of Maria Montessori

Perugia holds a special place in the history of Montessori education. It is here, in the heart of Umbria, that two institutions — the Ente Santa Croce Montessori and the Santa Croce Montessori Training Center — continue to carry forward the transformative vision of Dr. Maria Montessori.

The Center

Perugia holds a unique and direct legacy with Dr. Maria Montessori, a heritage that continues to inspire educators worldwide. Founded in 1950 by Montessori herself, the Center then passed under the guidance of Maria Antonietta Paolini, one of Dr. Montessori’s most devoted pupils. The Perugia Training Center has stood for decades as a center of excellence in Montessori education.
Today, the legacy is carried forward by Sylvia Dorantes, AMI Trainer (3-6), who worked closely as an assistant to Dr. Paolini. Under her leadership, together with a group of qualified staff, the center remains committed to quality training, international collaboration, and the preservation of Montessori’s scientific and humanistic vision. The Scuola Santa Croce in Perugia holds a remarkable legacy in the history of Montessori education. For over seven decades, this space became a hub for international Montessori training under the guidance of her close collaborator, Maria Antonietta Paolini. Today, Santa Croce continues to thrive as a beacon of Montessori education.
The center’s proximity to Santa Croce allows students to experience Montessori’s legacy not just in theory, but in practice—walking the same halls, observing in the same classrooms, and engaging with the same spirit of innovation that Maria Montessori herself championed.
